On February 1st, 2021, a military coup overthrew the democratically elected National League for Democracy’s government and instituted a military junta. People from all over the country rose up in response, and when the government decided to kill and imprison thousands of protesters, thousands more picked up arms to fight back. Since then, the newly formed National Unity Government and People’s Defense Forces alongside other existing ethnic militias have been engaged in a civil war with the military dictatorship.
This phase of the revolution is at is most decisive since the previous uprising in 1988, but since the founding of this nation, the war for liberation from the Burmese military has existed in many regions across Myanmar since its inception in 1948. Centuries of self-defense from communities n the margins of the state are now teaming up with the Bamar majority in the heartland, As this unprecedented opportunity for cooperation grows, a basis has been created for leftists internationally to participate in the fight as well.
